Yesterday, 26th june 2017, we celebrated the “World Refugee Day” through an exhibition made of pictures and videos named “Visioni d’oltremare”. It belongs to the schedule organized by the staff of the Sprar Project (System of Protection of Asylum Seekers and Refugees, headed by Ministero dell’Interno) and it is part of the actions of the project named “Lecco: a welcoming province”.
We tried to share the point of view about Italy and the everyday life of guys and girls who live in the CAS centers that we manage. We asked them to take picture of the things they like the most or that looks unusual, things that generates their emotions or raises questions. The result is an exhibition of 40 photographic panels accompanied by the captions they designed.
Several visitors came and see the exhibition, many of them were surprised by the content of the pictures. One guy took a picture in a bar: many empty tables and all the people drinking their coffee standing at the bar; another one shot a slide at the public park; and another one took the picture of an ordinary fountain because at his place fountains only belong to luxury hotels. And that’s exactly the point we wanted to focus on: these things are part of our daily life, but not for them. Their process of integration also involves the exchange of point of views in order to find a common ground without overlooking cultural peculiarities and connotations.
The aim of a teacher is not to create students in his own image, but to make students create their own image ∼ unknown
We projected mini video clips realized with the guys hosted at our camps. They told themselves sharing their perspectives and raising several thoughts in the audience: about the lack of articles of the Pakistan’s language; about the catholic christian baptism of Rebecca, who’s born in Lecco from Nigerian parents; about Lamine who came to Italy only 6 months ago, speaks a perfect Italian and he’s trying to memorize as many words as possible, like the word vo-ga-to-ri; about Modov who considers weird that families roam around in the city on Sunday and about Joy’s excitement who reckons that opportunity is a synonym of integration!
