Associazione Progetto Itaca Onlus is born.

Associazione Progetto Itaca Onlus is born.

Our first activity was the management of State Colonia Ferrovie in Ballabio for the reception of 12 guests. Recipients will become 25 in October 2014. The facilty was managed until October 2014.

Ballabio facility

20 October 2014

A cleric institute in Ballabio was granted us on a free memo. It can host 30/40 asylum seekers.

Sormano facility

18 November 2014

A 30-guests reception facility was opened in Sormano (CO) in cooperation with Caritas Como and Opera Don Guanella in Como. Facility closed in June 2015.

2014, arrivals in Italy

In 2014, 170 thousand people, among asylum seekers and economic migrant, arrived in Italy. Anyway, several other people arrived for family reunification and for other reasons (religious, health, study) through legal channels. [source: Centro Studi e Ricerche IDOS. Processing on UNHCR data, Istat].

Receptions rise quickly

Requests for reception in Progetto Itaca rose quickly in Lecco’s district. Requests passed from 25 asylum seekers in January to 60 in May, until it gets to 300 in December. A 1200% increase took place.  

4 flats opened in Calco

Progetto Itaca Società Cooperativa Sociale Onlus and Progetto Itaca Società Cooperativa Lavoro were setting up.

2 HUB for summer emergency

1 July 2015

During summer emergency due to several arrivals, we opened two HUBS inside school gyms in Maggianico (150 arrivals) and in Olginate (15 arrivals) with support of Croce Rossa Italiana and Protezione Civile.

Hotel Erba become a CARA

2 July 2015

50 new asylum seekers in Como district requested to use Hotel Erba facility in Erba (CO) as a CARA (Reception Center for Asylum Seekers). The center was closed in January 2016.

New flat in Olginate

4 July 2015

At first, Olginate flat hosted 6 men. In August 2016, it was used for women asylum seekers.

Ferrhotel opens in Lecco

17 August 2015

In cooperation with Fondazione Arca Milano, Ferrhotel facility was opened and run by us (until September 2016) in order to host 120 people.

HUB opened in Airuno

23 August 2015

Ex police barrack in Airuno (city property impounded from the mafia) was used for initial reception of 70 asylum seekers.

2015, 65.3 million worldwide forced migrant

UNHCR Global Trends 2015 reported that about 65.3 million people are forced to run away during this year. Hence, it means that, at the moment, 1 person on 113 is an asylum seekers, internally displaced person or refugee in the world.

Some events are relevant in the forced migration historical context: the Islamic state moved to Libia and took control on trafficking in Mediterranean. It continued to destroy in Iraq and Syria. Moreover, it formed a coalition with Boko Haram; – international community joined forces against the caliphate through precise raids in Syria and Iraq; – “European Agenda on Migration” established borders hotspot.

In 2015, 154 thousand people arrived on the Italian coasts. It is 9% less than 2014 arrivals. Partially, this is due because a share of migrants started to prefer Eastern Mediterranean route. A flat was opened for 5 asylum seekers.

Flat in Via Leonardo Da Vinci (Lecco) is opened.

It was reserved only for men. In the same flat, we created a space for Sartory project in order to employ migrant people. This project was created by Coop Lavoro.

Malgrate flats

We opened two more flats for hosting 30 men.

Cantù facility opened

25 guests were hosted in Cantù facility as asylum seekers.

Promessi Sposi residence in Lecco

Residence was destined for hosting families, single women and women with children. Each household has a living space that respects the family system.

Some events are relevant in the forced migration historical context: Government of National Accord was settled in Libia; – three ISIS attacks hit Damasco city in Syria. It caused 60 victims and beyond 100 wounded people. UE-Turkey agreement is signed. It led to on increase in the use of central Mediterranean migration route.

2016, not accompanied minors boom

The number of not accompanied minors arrivals in 2016 was doubled compared with 2015. It passed from 12 thousand to 26 thousand. They were Eritrean, Nigeria and Gambian as the majority.

Arrivals on Italian coasts in 2016 rose by 17,94% than the previous year. Arrivals reached 181 thousand migrants. Nigerian were 21%, Eritrean were 11% and Guinean were 7%. [source: Cruscotto statistico giornaliero, Ministry of the Interior]

Arrivals registered from beginning of January to the present moment increased by 45% from 2016 same period data. The majority consisted on Guinean, Ivorian and Nigerian (increasing order).
