Community service will start soon in Valmadrera

The operating protocol aimed to facilitate the asylum seekers’ integration on the territory of Valmadrera begins today. It will take place by carrying out community service led by the Comune di Valmadrera in collaboration with the Parish, Progetto Itaca and the Centro Farmaceutico Missionario. Eighteen guys have been introduced to the Comune. An educator considered peculiarities and skills of each guy and, according to these, proposed several kind of duties. For the moment, duties concern the cleaning of public areas and can be extended depending on the success of the collaboration. This is a brand-new collaboration indeed: tasks and duties are flexibles and the asylum seekers are accompanied to the activities by operators of Progetto Itaca to guide them towards the orientation to commitment planned over the long term and support them in the integrative process with the local community.  Once they get acquainted with the tasks they will be able to carry out the community service autonomously.

Other proposals have been submitted to the Comune di Valmadrera, such as designing and building benches made of pallet to beautify public areas and support the “culture of re-use”. The idea includes the possibility for them to take part to woodworking training courses at Aldo Moro, besides of community service but closely related to it; and the possibility to collaborate with local organizations to support the organization of events, such as interacting with the Parish to realize carnival wagons.

About the 18 guys: 14 belong to Progetto Itaca, which manages 30 asylum seekers hosted at former Villa Fomp, and 4 hosted in an apartment managed by Centro Farmaceutico Misssionario di Valmadrera. All of them are aware that these jobs are volunteering jobs; some of them joined the project driven by the willing to be physically and mentally active during the long bureaucratic procedure of application for political asylum.

The key word is: COOPERATION!
