Omar and Mamadou at work!

Professional traineeship may lead to work inclusion

Omar and Mamadou at work!

Omar and Mamadou are two asylum seekers who took part in Italian and professional training courses and who got a job with contract.

Letizia and Valentina, our social workers, follow all the phases of social inclusion with the objective of helping guests to become independent, to know their rights and duties and to be familiar with the services and opportunities the territory may offer.
The arduous objective of job independence starts with a recognition of the skills and qualifications of asylum seekers. They are then supported in the composition of a curriculum vitae and they are taught “how to find a job here in Italy”. According to SPRAR guidelines, the first step is to show the beneficiary how to face a job interview and how to deliver his/her CV. A personal email address is created and asylum seekers are explained why it is an important research tool.
During the stay in our reception facilities, Letizia and Valentina sound out all educational opportunities given by the territory so that they can inform and enrol our guests who can therefore obtain some useful certificate to show to the world of work.
This is what has been done for Omar and Mamadou: our social workers informed them about the possibility of a professional course for “mechanical operators” organized by Associazione Volontari Namaste, Fondazione Luigi Clerici and Associazione Piccole e Medie Industrie della Provincia di Lecco (API) and realized thanks to Fondazione J.P. Morgan’s funding.
Selections followed the criterions of Italian knowledge, of the interest showed for the topic and of the previous working experiences in their country of origin.

Omar tells us that classes enabled him to read a mechanical drawing and to turn it into something real by using milling machine, press and welding machine. They took part in 200 hours of theoretical/practical course which included training on high-risk activities and a fundamental professional traineeship in mechanical engineering companies in Lecco which lasted 110 hours. Its objective is to employ worthy people.

“Every day of traineeship made us gain experience” – Dama

Cooperation between course organizers and reception’s authorities has been successful for some asylum seekers who gained work integration.

Domenico Calveri, the person in charge of training in API, commented favourably explaining that the course has been realized to meet the following needs:

  • To understand mechanical work in Italian language;
  • To be familiar with labour market in Italy and to be aware of mechanical engineering sector which is fundamental in Lecco;
  • To find a job for asylum seekers to make them independent from European System of reception;
  • To give companies the possibility to find and hire experienced people. Beneficiaries of the course, in fact, acquired new skills and had the possibility to exploit precious expertise in Italian employment market.

“Dedication has been multiple: of our guests, of the companies that trusted us and made hiring possible” – D. Calveri

Francesca Ghirini from Associazione Namaste, Cristina Giussani, the course organizer and Monica Riva, director of Fondazione Clerici, appreciated the desire of inclusion and to work, their passion and their desire to learn.

“Professional traineeship may lead to work inclusion. This course can represent a new education method which really enables people to reach companies.” – M. Riva

The attestation of competence, released at the end of the course, gave Mamadou and Omar the possibility to start a professional traineeship in two companies in Lecco: Mamadou in F.lli Meroni in Dolzago and Omar in Flacon Service in Olgiate Molgora.

 F.lli Meroni tells that: “Mamadou integrated well in the workplace and with colleagues. He’s always helpful, polite and “hats off” when we find young people who work hard to learn and who put themselves out there with humility!

“I’ve always asked myself if I could be useful and I’ve finally managed to move from my condition of stagnation. I’m so happy I can finally work!” – Omar.
