At ASL of Via Tubi in Lecco together with a nurse of the Consultorio Familiare let’s start the active comparison journey on important subjects for moms such as breast -feeding and weaning:
- 24th November “growing up together” for moms with kids from 0 to 3 yr.
- 19 December “complementary nutrition” from 5 months and older.
We’re all in a circle with other Italian moms and, solicited by the nurse, we immediately start talking about breast-feeding, about our baby’s first few months and we make a lot of questions, because we are used to see nature that takes its course and we focus less on the why and how the baby grows. We ask why during these months of pregnancy we had to take so many blood tests and doctor appointments, to find out that also the Italian neo-moms have followed the same path and we’re a bit surprised. We ask what happens to our children when they drink milk and when they start eating actual food. We understand the importance of food and to keep breast-feeding to reinforce the child’s immune system. We ask questions concerning the male circumcision, a practice very popular in our countries, because we want to learn if it’s possible to practice it in Italy.
They talk to us about weaning and the possibility to use spices and chili instead of salt. We’re surprised to find out that we already wean the baby, apart from the fact that it’s the best type of complementary nutrition advised form the Global Health Organisation. We’re told to abound with vegetables and vegetable proteins, to reduce sugar to a minimum even if children love it!
Sara and Noemi, two of the cultural mediators of Progetto Itaca, and Emma, an intern, accompany us and, with patience and diligence, translate every word we don’t understand, since we are still learning Italian, a language so different from ours.
